The First Country to Recognize the Rights of Nature

In 2008, Ecuador became the first country to officially recognize the rights of nature. The population voted for and approved a new constitution that grants legally enforceable rights to nature—its mountains, rivers, forests, and islands—to exist, flourish, and evolve.
